R-1 Religious Worker Visa From Israel: The Complete Guide

R-1 is the dedicated work visa for religious workers: rabbis, shochtim, teachers, cantors, and other religious officials invited to serve a congregation or religious institution in the US. The biggest difference from other work visas: you don't file it, the organization in the US does.

Who files, and why it matters

The inviting American religious organization is the one who files Form I-129 with USCIS, not the individual. In practice, that means the pace of the process depends on the sponsoring organization, not just on you. It's worth checking early whether the organization has done this before and knows the requirements.

What the organization must meet

• Recognized as tax-exempt under IRC section 501⁦(c)⁩⁦(3)⁩
• A real physical location in the US where religious activity actually takes place
• Genuine religious activity, not just a stated religious purpose

What the applicant must meet

Continuous membership in the religious denomination for at least two years before filing. This isn't a formality: USCIS actually checks it, so it needs real documentation, not just a statement.

How long this takes, and when
