Israeli 5-Year Passport, Over 18? You Won't Get ESTA
Israel joined the Visa Waiver Program in late 2023, but not every Israeli qualifies for ESTA. The critical rule: a 5-year passport above age 18 is not eligible. Those under 18 with a 5-year passport should hurry.

Since September 27, 2023, Israel has been a member of the US Visa Waiver Program (VWP), and Israeli citizens can apply for ESTA instead of a B1/B2 tourist visa. The form is relatively simple, approval arrives within minutes to days, and the fee is $40 (raised from $21 in September 2025). But there's one rule that catches many applicants off guard.
The rule: 10-year passport for adults, 5-year only for minors
ESTA requires a full-validity biometric Israeli passport according to age. An adult (18+) must hold a passport originally issued for 10 years. A minor (under 18) qualifies with a 5-year passport - because that's the maximum validity the Interior Ministry issues to that age group.
The problem: an adult with a 5-year passport
Someone who received a 5-year passport as a minor and is still using it after turning 18 - will not receive ESTA approval. The application will be denied. The reason: the passport's original validity (5 years, not 10) does not meet the VWP requirement for adults. Even if the passport is biometric and currently valid - it won't pass screening.
What are the solutions?
- Get a new 10-year passport at the Israeli Interior Ministry and submit ESTA with it - the clean solution
- Apply for a B1/B2 tourist visa at the US Embassy - takes time, requires an interview and a higher fee ($185)
- For urgent cases we can arrange an expedited B1/B2 interview slot
Tip for minors with a 5-year passport
If you're still under 18 with a 5-year passport - apply for ESTA now. The approval will be valid until your passport expires. Once you turn 18, even if the passport is still valid - you won't be able to renew the ESTA. If travel is planned, don't wait.
Common mistake: an ESTA denial complicates the visa
If you applied for ESTA and were denied - it doesn't block you from getting a regular visa. But you'll have to report the denial on Form DS-160 when applying for the visa, and the consular officer will have questions. Better to check eligibility in advance than to be denied and complicate the interview.
How we help
We check your ESTA eligibility before applying - including passport type, age, prior visits to countries that disqualify ESTA, and more. If eligible - we file fast. If not - we set up a proper tourist visa route, including interview preparation.
