No Appointments Available? What to Do Instead of Refreshing

Everyone hits the same wall. You log in, the calendar is empty, and you start refreshing. Before you spend another evening on that, it is worth understanding how the booking system is built, because some appointments are not where people look for them.

Appointments are sorted by application type, not by city

Booking runs through ustraveldocs, where you create a profile. Here is the part that confuses people: after you pick the region, you choose the service and the location together, in one step. There are four separate options, and each keeps its own calendar:

• Jerusalem passport renewal
• Tel Aviv passport renewal
• Jerusalem first-time applicants, which is also where CRBAs live
• Tel Aviv first-time applicants

So an empty renewal calendar tells you nothing about first-time availability, or the other way round. And yes, check both cities, not only the one nearer to you.

The move that deletes everything you hold

Under pressure the instinct is to grab a couple of slots and decide later. One in Jerusalem, one in Tel Aviv, just in case.

Do not. Duplicate bookings, whether in one location or across both, cancel immediately, and not just the extras. All of them. People find this out on the morning of the appointment they thought they had.

What you are allowed to do, and most people miss

You can book family members under a single profile. A family renewing four passports does not need four accounts and four separate trips, which saves the drive as much as the paperwork.

When the calendar really is empty and the flight is close

For immediate travel, both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv take walk-ins before 8:30 in the morning. Two things to be clear on before you rely on it: what gets issued is an emergency passport of limited validity rather than a full one, and emergency requests are not accepted by phone or by email.

And if your route is DS-82 in the first place, meaning a renewal of a passport issued when you were 16 or older, you can sidestep the whole appointment problem and mail it in. Not everyone qualifies, but if you do, that is the shortest path there is.
