Renewing by Mail from Israel: Who Qualifies, and What Gets Sent Back
DS-82 saves you the appointment and the drive, if you qualify and if the package is right. What belongs in it, what sends it back, and how the courier slip works.

The cheapest way to renew a US passport in Israel is to never go to the embassy. DS-82 lets you mail the application in, or drop it at the Jerusalem window, and skip both the appointment queue and the trip. The catch is that fewer people qualify than think they do, and packages come back for reasons that were entirely avoidable.
Do you qualify?
Four conditions, all of them at once:
- The passport is undamaged and was issued within the last 15 years
- You were 16 or older when it was issued
- It was issued for ten years
- It is in your current name, or you have legal documentation of the change
The one that trips people up is age at issuance. A passport issued when you were 15 cannot be renewed by mail even if you got it last spring. And children under 16 cannot renew at all: their route is DS-11, in person, with both parents present.
What belongs in the package
A returned application is not a day lost. It travels back to you, you fix it, you send it again, and the clock restarts. Three things have to be in there:
- A printed, barcoded DS-82. Without the barcode it comes back for correction, and this is the most common reason of all
- The printed payment confirmation. Since March 1, 2026 the fee is paid in advance on the government payment site, and cash and checks are refused
- A pre-paid Israel Post courier slip, 60 NIS, required for every passport and CRBA delivered inside Israel
One detail that saves families money: a single courier slip covers everyone. Renewing three passports together means paying that 60 NIS once, not three times.
How long to allow
Six to eight weeks for a regular passport, counted from when the application reaches processing. Work backward from your next trip rather than forward from the day you remembered.
The middle option
Since December 1, 2025 you can hand a DS-82 in at the Jerusalem drop box window instead of mailing it. Worth knowing before you count on it: the drop box still requires an appointment, so it is no help if you cannot get one. It handles DS-82 and DS-5504 only.
Where we come in
We check whether this route is even open to you, because there is no sense starting down it otherwise. Then we complete the barcoded form, arrange the advance payment and the courier slip, and check the package before it goes. You print and sign. That is the whole of your part.
