Lost or Stolen US Passport in Israel: What to Do First
A missing passport isn't the end of the world, but the first steps decide whether this takes two weeks or six. What blocks the old passport, what gets you a new one, and the emergency route for a flight that won't wait.

A lost or stolen passport is one of those moments that causes real panic, and rightly so: it isn't just a missing document, it's also the worry that someone else will use it. The good news is that the process is simpler and faster than it looks, as long as you do it in the right order.
Step one: block the old passport
Reporting a passport lost or stolen automatically cancels it the moment Form DS-64 (Statement Regarding a Lost or Stolen Passport) is filed. Once cancelled, it can never be used again, even if it later turns up. This is the first and most important step, because it stops anyone else from misusing your document.
Step two: applying for a new one
Since the old passport is no longer in hand, there's no mail-in renewal route. The application is filed as a first-time passport, on Form DS-11, in person at the Embassy in Jerusalem or the branch in Tel Aviv, exactly like anyone applying for a passport for the first time.
What to bring without the passport itself
- Any other ID you still have (an Israeli teudat zehut, a US driver's license)
- Whatever proof of US citizenship survived: a photocopy of the old passport, a CRBA, a naturalization certificate
- A compliant passport photo
- Proof of advance payment on the government site, as with every passport application since March 2026
When the flight won't wait
Anyone outside the US who needs a passport urgently can get an emergency, limited-validity passport, in some cases within 24 hours from the Embassy. It's the exact same emergency track that exists for anyone who discovers their passport expired before a flight, only this time the reason is that it's missing rather than out of date.
How long this actually takes
A standard new-passport application takes an average of six to eight weeks, like any first-time passport request. With an urgent-travel request it can be shortened considerably, but that depends on appointment availability and how busy the Embassy is that particular week.
How we help
We file the DS-64 on your behalf the same day, put together the alternate proof-of-citizenship packet without you having to guess what's enough, and secure the right Embassy appointment, including the emergency track if a flight is close. A free initial check with no obligation, and payment only after an appointment is set.
