Filing CRBA Online ⁦(eCRBA)⁩: Step by Step

Until recently, a CRBA request ⁦(the official US birth record for a baby born abroad)⁩ ran on paper forms and an Embassy meeting. That's changed: the process now starts online, through eCRBA, and it changes both what to prepare and when.

Step one: a MyTravelGov account

Filing an eCRBA requires a MyTravelGov account, secured through a login.gov sign-in. It's the gateway to the whole process, and takes a few minutes to set up.

The step most parents miss

One rule cancels quite a few appointments: the eCRBA application must be filed and completed at least five days before the scheduled Embassy appointment. The new appointment system automatically cancels any appointment without a completed eCRBA behind it, including every document uploaded legibly.

What actually gets uploaded

• The baby's full Israeli birth certificate
• The US-citizen parent's passport
• Proof of the US-citizen parent's physical presence in the US before the birth
• A marriage certificate, if the parents are married
• Form DS-5507 if one parent is not a US citizen or is not present for the filing

Payment first, not at the appointment

The CRBA fee ⁦($100)⁩ is paid online through Pay.gov as part of the process, before the actual appointment can be scheduled. Showing up without advance payment, just like showing up without a completed eCRBA, simply won't be accepted.

What happens at the Embassy itself

The appointment itself is a short interview to verify the uploaded documents, not a filing from scratch. Anyone who arrives prepared, with the originals of everything already uploaded in scanned form, leaves the appointment with the process already in motion.
