Why does a child need an SSN?
Without a valid SSN by year-end you can't claim the Child Tax Credit (up to $1,700 refund per child). It's also required for tax filings, US bank accounts, and more.
What's the difference above vs under age 12?
Under 12 can be filed without an embassy appointment (faster and cheaper). Age 12+ requires appearing for an appointment. We handle both paths.
Can we get the SSN together with the passport?
Yes - SSN is usually filed as part of the child citizenship package (CRBA + passport + SSN). A standalone SSN is also possible.
